Göta channel

Göta channel

The Göta channel crosses Schweden completely and has an incredible number of locks. Marked out by scotsman Thomas Telford and Baltasar von Platen in only 20 days, it took a whole 22 years (from 1810 til 1832) to build it. When the first railway line opened in 1870 the channel lost some of its importance.

The most prominent edifice of the channel probably are the Carl-Johan-locks which connect Lake Roxen to Berg. It takes 7 locks to overcome the 18.8 meters of altitude.
